Prince Court Medical Centre has made history as the first hospital in Malaysia to successfully perform the Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) procedure, a groundbreaking new treatment for obesity.

In a statement, the medical centre said that the procedure was performed on Dec 30 last year by a multidisciplinary team comprising Consultant Gastroenterologists Datuk Dr Ryan Ponnudurai and Dr Mandeep Singh Awtar Singh, together with General and Bariatric Surgeons Datuk Dr Tikfu Gee and Dr Lim Shu Yu.

It said the ESG procedure is a minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure that uses an endoscope to reshape the stomach and reduce its size with internal sutures.

“This technique eliminates the need for external incisions, ensuring a quicker recovery and minimal discomfort for patients,” the statement read.

Dr Ryan described the introduction of the ESG procedure in Malaysia as a milestone in weight-loss solutions which provides patients with a safe and effective option, especially for those who want to avoid surgery.

Meanwhile, Dr Lim highlighted the value of providing diverse treatment options.

“There’s no one-size-fits-all solution for weight loss and ESG is an excellent option among the many treatments available.

“It offers patients a less invasive way to achieve their health goals without surgery, giving them more control over their weight and health,” she said.

Prince Court performed its first ESG procedure on a 29-year-old patient seeking a non-surgical weight-loss solution, and she was back on her feet a day later with only minimal bloating.

Prince Court’s latest milestone also marked a significant advancement in weight-loss treatment in Malaysia.

“This cutting-edge procedure reflects Prince Court’s commitment to providing research-based solutions that can enhance patient’s lives through advanced medical care,” the statement added.
