Melaka Addresses Leptospirosis Rise with New Safety Protocols

Leptospirosis cases in Melaka surged to 80 between January 1 and July 6, compared to 28 during the same period last year, according to reports.

Dr. Muhamad Akmal Saleh, Chair of the State Rural Development, Agriculture, and Food Security Committee, and acting chair of the Health, Human Resources, and Unity Committee, attributed the rise to outbreaks at three recreational centers. Fortunately, no deaths have been recorded.

The affected recreational centres in the Jasin district—Jasin Hot Springs, Taman Eko Rimba, and Taman Tiga Budaya—have reopened after thorough cleaning.

Leptospirosis, a zoonotic disease like Japanese encephalitis and rabies, is frequently reported in Melaka. This year, many cases emerged from recreational centres due to disease spread among visitors. However, early measures, including cleaning and Health Department monitoring, have controlled the situation, Dr. Muhamad Akmal stated this during the state-level World Zoonosis Day celebration at Melaka Zoo.

Dr. Muhamad Akmal added that the state government, through the Melaka Health Department, will organise short courses on zoonotic disease management for recreational center employees to curb the disease’s spread.
