Unusual insect stings in Vietnam cause increasing hospitalization

June 10, 2014

The number of people in the northern provinces bitten and stung by insects recently increased, said Dr. Nguyen Xuan Hung from the National Tropical Disease Hospital on Saturday.

Most people hospitalized have suffered from insect stings since the beginning of summer. Most of them are from midland provinces and mountainous areas such as Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc and Lang Son.

Some of them said that they did not know to be bitten and stung by insects. Others said they were negligent though they had seen insect stings. They decided to go to seek treatment after getting fever, fatigue and yellow skin for many days.

Late treatment could cost their lives, said Dr. Hung.

Although number of insect sting victims hospitalized is about 20, it is unusual insect sting cases because being bitten by insects is common in a tropical country like Vietnam.
