3M: The Role of an Employer and Employee in Safety and Health
Global Science Company 3M Malaysia held a demonstration on Wednesday to share the importance of occupational safety hazard and health at OGA 2017, in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Mohd Azhar Kamaruddin, the technical specialist for Fall Protection and spokesperson of the demonstration, together with MNC Asia Training Manager Elmer Sabelino, explained the basics of every personal fall arrest, including anchorages, full body harnesses, connectors and rescue. The goal of the demonstration was for both the employee and the employer to start prioritizing safety at work and when returning home.
According to a study conducted by the Ministry of Health Malaysia, between 2000 and 2013, it was discovered that Malaysia encountered an annual average of 9.2 fatal occupational injuries per 100,000 workers. The most common type of injuries are falling from heights, which make up 28% of all fatal occupational injuries, being struck by moving objects, which add up to 17% and being struck by falling objects which come up to 9%.
The injuries were predominantly reported in the manufacturing, automotive, chemical, transportation, construction and oil & gas industries. Employees and employers need to exercise their responsibilities, which are vigilance and precaution, in order to prevent fatal occupational injuries, according to 3M Malaysia.
