Good health not just about physical well-being

February 19, 2014

Last Sunday’s report (“Matters of heart can affect heart”) is a reminder that good health is not just a matter of physical well-being.

For example, it has been well documented that stress can precipitate peptic ulcers.

Good health encompasses emotional and social well-being; this is something for us to ponder over in our fast-paced, success-oriented society.

Divorces between young couples after just a few years of marriage; climbing the career ladder at the expense of putting others down; the manifestation of anger in road-rage cases; online bullying and vigilante “judgment” – all these do not point to social well-being.

Unhealthy relationships ultimately affect the health of the individuals concerned. This, in turn, affects the family and society at large.

The heart of the matter is the need to cultivate good health by nurturing physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual well-being.
