‘Toys from China hazardous’

June 6, 2014

TOYS imported from China do not meet global safety standards and are potentially hazardous to children as they contain suspected dangerous matter such as cadmium, arsenic ingredients and plumbum, Harian Metro reported.

The report said the contents of these playthings could affect a child’s IQ level, leading to mental retardation, a defective neuro system and even cancer at a young age.

The report quoted expert sources from the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry, several consumer associations and the Malaysian Paediatrics Association as saying that even touching the products could affect the child.

Ministry enforcement director Mohd Roslan Mayhayuddin said raids since August 2010 had resulted in seizures of several types of hazardous toys, smuggled from abroad to flood markets and bazaars in Malaysia.
