Commercial sunbeds banned in Australia

January 5, 2015

Australia has banned commercial sunbeds in most states and territories as it has been found to spread cancer.

The ban took effect on the 1st of January in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, Queensland and in the Australian Capital Territory. Western Australia said it will follow suit.

“Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world,” Cancer Council Australia advocacy director Paul Grogan said in a statement.

“Solariums expose users to extremely highly levels of UV (ultraviolet) radiation, greatly increasing their risk of melanoma and other skin cancers,” he added.

The ban comes after a long push for one. Australia has two or three times the rate of skin cancer compared to Canada, the US and Britain.
