How to prevent sleep apnea

January 12, 2015

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder where breathing sometimes stops and starts as you sleep.

Here are some ways to prevent it:

    • Quit smoking. The muscles that keep the airways open are less likely to collapse at night when you sleep if you don’t smoke.
    • Keep a healthy weight.
    • Avoid medicines and alcohol. They can relax your throat muscles and slow your breathing.
    • Maintain a regular sleep routine: steady sleep helps you relax. Also, sleep apnea is less likely to occur when you get plenty of sleep.
    • Avoid caffeine and heavy meals within two hours of going to bed.
    • Sleep on your side.
