Cause and symptoms of cervical cancer
Indonesia recently lost one of its celebrities, Julia Perez, due to cervical cancer.
Her departure raised awareness about a form of cancer that has been labeled as one of the most lethal by the Health Ministry.
Cervical cancer is often associated with the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), although it is also linked to other types of cancers. According to the American Cancer Society, HPV is not the only cause of cervical cancer, as the disease also depends on a woman’s DNA, smoking habits, HIV (human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS) infection, the age at which she became pregnant and other factors.
In addition, cervical cancer occurs when cervix cell “gradually develops pre-cancerous changes” that may turn into a cancer. The process can take years, but in some cases, it can be less than that. Pre-cancerous cells can disappear in some women, but turn into cancer in others.
Among the symptoms of cervical cancer that women should watch out for are changes in the menstrual cycle that can be longer or heavier than usual, bleeding after vaginal sex, bleeding after menopause and pain during sex. However, since these symptoms can also be caused by other health problems, it is better to seek professional advice if you experience these signs.
Undergoing a Pap test of Pap smear is one of the best ways to prevent cervical cancer, as it will detect precancerous or cancerous cells. Another way is to take HPV vaccines in three doses throughout a period of six months.
