Sunway Medical Centre holds symposium for common eye conditions

While we often assume that a slight discomfort in the eye is something that will come and go, in fact, those tiny pair of monogram balls are more likely informing us about the condition of our eye health.

In conjunction with World Sight Day recently, Sunway Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, organised the World Sight Day Symposium 2022 to highlight the importance of paying attention to your eyes; themed, “Envision For A Better Future,” eye specialists from Sunway Eye Centre addressed various conditions including retinal detachment, myopia, red eye, optic neuritis, aged-related macular degeneration (AMD), and paediatric eye conditions.

The World Sight Day Symposium 2022 had more than 350 participants, comprising mainly healthcare professionals and general practitioners.

“Globally, at least 1 billion people have near or distance vision impairment that could be prevented or has yet to be addressed. This symposium has successfully brought attention to the importance of caring for your eyes. As the largest private quaternary hospital in Malaysia, we are dedicated to provide better diagnosis and treatment for various eye conditions that will improve our patients’ quality of life,” said Dr. Seow Vei Ken, CEO at Sunway Medical Centre, Sunway City.

The symposium addressed six common eye conditions and the advancements in diagnosis and treatment in separate panel discussions. Discussions were held in sessions headed by the respective consultant opthalmologists and included topics like retinal detachment, blurry vision, and red eye/conjunctivitis.

As for eye treatments, Consultant Ophthalmologist (Medical Retina), Dr. Tara Mary George, shared – in one panel discussion – that studies have demonstrated the efficacy of different antiVEGF medications, and that optimal dosing regimen and delivery mechanism has increased overall vision and minimised the burden on patients with Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

Meanwhile, Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist, Dr. Fiona Chew Lee Min, stated that early recognition, diagnosis, and treatment are essential to optimise children’s eye health to prevent vision loss – it is estimated that one in five preschool children have vision problems and disorders that go on to affect their adulthood.

The symposium ended on a high note with key learnings and takeaways from a panel discussion moderated by Consultant Ophthalmologist, Dr. Chin Pik Kee. As the largest private quaternary hospital in Malaysia, Sunway Medical Centre strives to encourage discussion on the latest clinical practices and adopts the best practices throughout the hospital.
