What is the osteopathic view of wellness health care for my heart?

October 30, 2013

From the Osteopathic perspective, wellness health care for the heart closely resembles the optimal strategies applied for the overall health of the body.

In fact, since osteopathy holds that the body is a single organism, that structure and function are interdependent, and that the body has intrinsic healing mechanisms, even mild to moderate cardiovascular disease can be healed without conventional invasive procedures.

Having said this, I want to acknowledge that the application of these osteopathic principles must be personally-tailored to the individual where all the factors of his/her health and disease are considered.

In general, all cardiovascular disease results from a combination of the ill effects of systemic inflammation- including damage to the innermost lining of the blood vessels called the endothelium-and the deposition of cholesterol and calcium over, and into, the sites of the endothelial damage.

One of the oldest principles of osteopathy is to apply manual medicine, breathing, and physical activity techniques to improve the flow of blood and lymphatic fluids to deliver nutrients and other resources, while removing by-products and toxins more efficiently.

Further, by the practice of deep abdominal breathing 15-30 minutes per day and aerobic physical activity 25-40 minutes per day (5 days/week), the vegetative healing mode of the nervous system combined with the enhanced circulation and distribution of nutrients, antioxidants, oxygen, and hormones will add to the efficiency of body healing.

My personal opinion is that if we give the body what is needs, then the body will rally its intrinsic healing mechanisms to restore original normalcy of structure and function.

More specifically, if we give the body minerals, electrolytes, antioxidants, and other nutrients, and reduce significantly the burden of so much processed food (stressful fuel), then the body can heal the endothelial lining of the blood vessels and even de-bulk the cholesteral deposits inside the walls of the arteries.

I have observed the beneficial effects of applying these principles in the restoration of health and vitality of many patients with cardiovascular disease over the past 9 years. I can recommend and tailor these strategies to the individual in the wellness clinic for any, and all, who sincerely desire to take charge of their cardiovascular wellness.
