Govt exceeds 2026 target for permanent medical officer appointments
The health ministry has exceeded its target for permanent medical officer appointments this year, with 4,691 permanent appointment offers made so far against its target of 4,500.
Health minister Dzulkefly Ahmad said the figure included candidates from previous appointment exercises who received approval from the Public Services Commission this year, as well as reserve candidates from earlier exercises who had since been offered permanent posts.
“There were 5,288 contract medical officers serving under the ministry as of May 31,” he said in a written parliamentary reply.
Dzulkefly said 6,280 house officers are undergoing housemanship and are therefore not yet eligible for permanent appointments.
He was responding to Willie Mongin (GPS-Puncak Borneo), who asked for the number of contract doctors yet to be absorbed permanently.
In a separate written reply, the health minister had said that 2,518 medical officers resigned between 2024 and June 2026, with 71 of them leaving to work overseas.
