This will make you think twice about ever using disposable chopsticks

The average Singaporean may be fairly well-versed in food safety, but how sure are we about how clean disposable chopsticks are?

An article from China Daily reports that chopstick factories in China, which mass produce the disposable utensils for export and domestic use, use rather questionable methods to keep them free of bacteria.

A factory in Anji county, Zhejiang province was found to have boiled them with industrial hydrogen peroxide and polished them with paraffin. After packing them simply, they were distributed to Shanghai markets before appearing in restaurants in China.

One diner, who practices the habit of sterilizing her chopsticks with boiling water before use found that the water she had dunked them in had become cloudy and grey.

Analysis by experts showed that the chopsticks she had been about to eat with had been soaked in industrial sulfurous chemicals, and still retained traces.

So the next time you reach for your disposable chopsticks to have dinner, you might want to think twice about where it might have been, before putting them into your mouth.
