Taiwan-Malaysia cooperation: bridging the gap for medical professionals

July 29, 2021

With its excellent ICT and world-class medical standards, Taiwan has developed further on AI, big data, mobile healthcare and telemedicine with the data foundation built by the national health insurance.

Aimed at building closer networking between the Taiwanese and Malaysian medical community, the Bureau of Foreign Trade, Taiwan, and Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) organised an online showcase titled “Taiwan and Malaysia, Joining Hands in Bringing Greater Health to Life” on 28 July.

The event featured six well-known hospitals from Taiwan and attracted more than 100 Malaysian medical professionals and related practitioners.

Dr. Ching-Ting Tan

Vice Superintendent Dr. Ching-Ting Tan from National Taiwan University Hospital Hsin-Chu Branch introduced the hospital’s dynamic image telemedicine service. She said, “Not only are we able to perform photo analysis, we now have the capability to perform real-time sonography, dermatologic, ophthalmologic examinations. This makes remote consultations more feasible and efficient.” These advanced telemedicine services will provide patients with better services before their medical treatment abroad, from preoperative evaluations to postoperative follow-up examinations.

Chang Gung Memorial Hospital stated that the unique properties of protons enable treatment without exposing the normal tissues behind tumours to radiation. Proton therapy can accurately treat cancer lesions in a 360-degree angle while minimising the side effects of radiotherapy on normal healthy tissues. The combination of proton therapy with surgery and/or chemotherapy provides a high success rate in combating tumours, making it a great new choice for cancer treatment.

Dr. Li-Chien Chien

Dr. Li-Chien Chien, Director of National Cheng Kung University Hospital, also mentioned that the hospital has conducted international collaboration programs with Kenya, India, Vietnam, Indonesia and other SEA countries since 2008 by co-hosting international conferences, joint-research and personnel exchange programs. National Cheng Kung University currently has three overseas hubs, respectively in Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand in order to promote networking opportunities with overseas healthcare-related enterprises, governments and academic institutes.

During the webinar, Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital also introduced one of its latest heart surgery techniques, the “Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement, TAVR”. This type of transcatheter valve replacement shortens the operation time while reducing bleeding issues; ultimately, helping the patient to recover faster. The hospital has recently introduced Taiwan’s latest hybrid surgery platform, which greatly shortens the operating time of any surgery.

Shin Kong Wu Ho Su Memorial Hospital

The Health Examination Centre of Shin Kong Wu Ho Su Memorial Hospital provides professional medical team diagnosis, separate disease examination environment and various medical equipment. It also provides a one-stop examination service for the screening of three major diseases, providing complete follow-up and health management to patients.

Chief of Division of Colorectal Surgery Dr. Huang Jen Lai from Landseed International Hospital talked about the hospital’s latest trend of cancer surgical treatment, the “Organ Preservation Therapy”, most commonly used for treating rectal cancer and/or anal cancer. This type of treatment provides patients with customised treatment, which has a significant effect on improving the quality of life of patients after surgery. The “Organ Preservation Therapy” can also be applied in other cancers, such as nasal cavity tumour, tongue cancer, laryngeal cancer and more.
