Dietary Fish Oil Supplements can Heal Bed Sores
Israeli researchers are reporting that dietary fish oil supplements have the ability to heal bed sores.
Pierre Singer, professor at the Tel Aviv University’s Sackler Faculty of Medicine and doctoral candidate Miriam Theilla at the Rabin Medical Centre, Singer performed a randomized experiment involving 40 critically-ill patients with painful bed sores.
The researchers added eight grams of fish oil to the daily diet of the half the number of patients for a three-week period. The remaining patients were given standard hospital diet.
The pain scores were measured via the Pressure Ulcer Scale for Healing. At the end of three weeks a 20%-25% improvement was noted in pain scores. Additionally, the immune system was more efficient and the level of inflammation was also reduced.
Fish oil, which has plenty of Omega-3 fatty acids and anti-oxidants, is also known to help improve blood pressure control and reduce inflammation in the body. The present study details are published in the British Journal of Nutrition and the American Journal of Critical Care.
