1,000 in Pagoh get free health, heart checks

January 14, 2013

PAGOH – Some 1,000 people from around Bukit Pasir here underwent medical screening yesterday during the Sayangi Jantung Anda medical outreach programme.

Jointly organised by Briged Sukarelawan NSTP-Media Prima and the National Heart Institute (IJN), the programme was held at SK Sri Bukit Pasir.

Sixty-six volunteers from the brigade and IJN took part in the programme, where medical screening for adults and children, including electrocardiography (ECG) and echocardiogram (Echo) screening for those with a high risk of heart disease, were offered.

Health talks and cardiopulmonary resuscitation demonstrations were conducted, while child-friendly activities kept the younger ones occupied.

A gotong-royong session to cook lunch for guests was undertaken by volunteers.

IJN chief operating officer Akmal Arief Mohamed Fauzi said the programme was part of the institute’s initiative to provide continuous exposure and education regarding healthcare to the community.

He said the local community should take the opportunity to undergo medical screenings to ensure they were healthy.

“Among the volunteers here today are three specialist doctors, including our consultant cardiologist Datuk Dr Mohd Nasir Muda.

“We understand that not everybody from outside of the Klang Valley can come to IJN, so, as part of our outreach programme, we organise programmes like this so that people here can also enjoy our services.”

The programme was launched by Jorak assemblyman Dr Sharuddin Md Salleh.

Present was NSTP head of corporate communications Wan Abdillah Wan Nawi.

Sharuddin thanked the brigade and IJN for choosing Jorak as the venue for the programme.

“We all realise the importance of taking care of our health.

“By having this programme, the people here have the opportunity to undergo medical screenings and consult with specialist doctors if they have any questions about their health.”

Wan Abdillah said another programme would be held at SK Bukit Rahmat today.

He invited people from the surrounding areas to attend and learn about healthy living.

Besides volunteers from the brigade and IJN, the programme involved volunteers from the Selangor Adventure Club and staff from Adabi Consumer Industries Sdn Bhd.

The programme was also supported by Syarikat Takaful Malaysia Bhd.
