Health-a-thon educates students on healthy lifestyle
KOTA KINABALU: The Parents and Teachers Association (PTA) of SMK St Francis Convent (M) organised a school-wide Health-a-thon in order to raise funds for future fitness activities and for the purchase of basic gym equipment for the school.
The Health-a-thon is part of an effort to educate students on the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and to strengthen the relationship between the PTA, Board of Management and Ex-Franciscan Association.
About 600 Health-a-thon cards were printed and distributed amongst students, teachers and parents, and among the main activities held were Zumba, ‘Skip-a-thon’, health screening and even an open gym.
A Zumba instructor had been invited to conduct a one-hour Zumba class involving all students, parents and teachers.
On the other hand, the ‘Skip-a-thon’ was a competition aimed at introducing the students to the art of jumping rope. Various jumps, tricks, techniques and methods were carried out individually and in groups, with some teachers and staff who also took the opportunity to share some of their jump rope skills.
Aside from that, health screening was also carried out including Body Mass Index calculation, blood pressure test, and blood test for cholesterol and sugar level.
A health exhibition was also held amidst these activities to aid the students in their understanding towards living a healthy lifestyle, while a gym instructor was invited to the open gym to assist the students in understanding and utilising gym equipment in a proper manner.
