NTU’s medical school to have 3-D virtual dissection

March 27, 2013

SINGAPORE – Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU) Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine will be the first in Southeast Asia to use the latest interactive 3-D anatomage table.

This table, which is also in use at Imperial College London, offers a realistic virtualisation of full body, life-size anatomy in 3-D and is used for virtual dissections. It will be used primarily for anatomy education during the students’ first and second years.

Users can also upload their own patient data, for example from MRI or CT scans, to showcase to students real patient cases. Students can also use a virtual knife to remove layers of tissue or to view the body’s internal structures and at the same time to fully rotate the body, all with the swipe of a finger.

The anatomage table is imported from the United States and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine will be one of the few medical schools in the world to be using it.

The school, which is Singapore’s newest medical school and is jointly set up by NTU and Imperial College London, is ready for its first intake of students in August this year.
