When it comes to managing health, Americans go digital

November 5, 2013

THIS year, some 95 million Americans have used their mobile phones to access health data — a big jump from last year’s 75 million, according to new data.

Findings also showed that 45% of adults with a chronic condition rely on the internet to manage their condition, while 38% said their smartphone was most essential.

Top online users were patients with cystic fibrosis followed by growth hormone deficiencies, acne, ADD and ADHD, hepatitis C, migraines, Crohn’s disease, chronic kidney disease, generalized anxiety disorder, and bipolar disorder.

The data comes from market research firm Manhattan Research, which just released its annual Cybercitizen Health US survey, based on a survey of 8,605 US adults.

Mobihealthnews cites that other findings have yielded conflicting results, such as those from Pew Internet Project, which found people with chronic diseases are actually less likely to use digital tools to manage their health than healthy people.
