‘Ban staples in food packaging’

PETALING JAYA: Most businesses are now using staple pins as fasteners for their packaged food which, if swallowed by consumers accidentally, can cause internal bleeding, PAS Miri chief Jofri Jaraiee said today.

Jaraiee said traders were now using staple pins instead of sealants to wrap junk food and children could unknowingly swallow the metal pieces.

He added that the staple pins could either pass through the body without causing harm, or it could tear the linings of the body, causing internal bleeding.

Jaraiee said the Health Ministry should constantly monitor the packaging of food that used staples and ban it if necessary.

“We urge the government and relevant parties to help explain the dangers of using staples in food packaging.

“Businesses can use clamps instead to ensure consumers are not at risk of swallowing the staple pins,” Jaraiee said in a statement.
