CHINA: A businessman was arrested for adding a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction to a white liqour known as baijiu, to gain profit.
The man, known as Huang, owns a liquor factory in Jianshi County in the province of Hubei.
Reports from Xinhua say he paid 2,400 yuan (US$390) for a kilogram of sildenafil powder, a chemical compound used in Viagra.
Huang added 130 milligrams of sildenafil per 100 milliliters of liquor, producing 750 litres of the spirit in total, according to the police.
He then sold his drinks for 30 yuan (US$5) per bottle, marketing it as nutritional and healthy.
Adding the drug to liquor is not only illegal, but poses a health risk to patients who suffer from cardiovascular disease.
Its strong side effects are also dangerous to those who suffer from vertigo, back pain, anaemia, nausea and more.
Huang gave 810 bottles to his friends and reportedly kept 30 for his personal use.
Chinese authorities are now trying to track down the unconsumed bottles of Huang’s liquor in an effort to limit the number of people who might fall sick from it.
