Can your plate make you eat less?

September 18, 2014

Stressed about losing your weight and fed up of trying different diets? The answer may lie in the colour of your crockery, now. What you choose to at in may make you shed the pounds, says a study by Cornell University. It has delved into the relation between the size and colour of your plate and your mindfulness and do intake.

What the study was about: Participants in the study who were served Alfredo pasta (which is creamy white) on a white plate actually ate roughly 22% more pasta as compared to those who were served on red plates (see the contrast here).

It was realised that people tended to eat more food, subconsciously, when it blended in with the shade or colour of the plate that it was placed on. Thus, those served the pasta on a white plate ate a greater amount of food than those served on a red plate. This is because a contrasting colour sends a ‘warning’ signal to the brain to make the person more aware of what he/she is eating. So maybe next time you want to lose weight, consider not just the portion size, but the colour of the plate too!
