Eggs-traordinary new product made from plants
PETALING JAYA – While fake eggs made from chemicals are “a huge no-no”, how about those made from plants?
The egg replacements, known as Beyond Eggs, come in the form of powder made from sorghum produced by a food company in California.
Sounds fishy? This new product is likely to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration as their mayonnaise replacement (usually made of eggs and vinegar), also made from plants, is already being sold in large retail stores in the United States.
What is even more impressive about this technology is that it is backed by some of the world’s richest man, including Bill Gates and Li Ka-shing.
With a start-up capital of US$30mil (RM97mil), the objective of Beyond Eggs is to remove animals from the food equation.
Hampton Creek Foods, the company producing Beyond Eggs, believed that raising animals takes up space and water, while having an impact on the environment. It wanted to give the world a cheaper and healthier option to the staple food.
The company’s CEO Josh Tetrick said: “The egg replacement still needs some fine-tuning. It tastes just as close as a real egg.”
