Hush-out sound for a good night’s sleep
SMART earplugs are in the works that filter out the sounds keeping you up at night and allow you to hear the important ones – such as the alarm the next morning.
A team in San Diego used noise-blocking foam to design the earplugs, which connect wirelessly to your smartphone, and when the alarm sounds, only you can hear it, making Hush a good choice for couples or roommates who wake up at different times.
It also allows you to hear other sounds you might wish to let in, such as calls from a particular contact in your phone.
The accompanying app contains a long menu of soothing sounds, from a crackling fire to a waterfall to ocean waves.
It can also play binaural beats, heard best using headphones rather than speakers because the pitches differ on either side. Soothing binaural beats are well known to lull the listener to sleep.
Support for Hush is off to a remarkable start: the start-up earned over US$200,000 – more than twice its original goal – just days after launching a campaign on Kickstarter.
The product can be pre-ordered at a discounted price of US$115 with delivery expected in May, and international shipping is available for anywhere in the world.
