Japanese team to sell iPS-derived heart cells

November 4, 2014

A Japanese team says it plans to sell heart muscle cells made from induced pluripotent stem, or iPS, cells, to test new medicines.

The project was started by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, or NEDO, Kyoto University’s Center for iPS Cell Research and Application and 3 private companies including Takara Bio.

The project is aimed at reducing costs of animal and clinical tests needed by pharmaceutical firms to confirm whether new drugs can cause adverse effects on the heart, such as abnormal cardiac rhythms.
