Smartphone attachment eliminates doctor visits to diagnose ear infections
If you can’t imagine an otoscope smartphone attachment, it’s probably because the only time you’ve ever seen one was at the doctor’s office. It’s here: an otoscope that enables a view of the inner ear canal on the smartphone’s screen, and a corresponding app that lets you snap a picture and send it to your doctor for diagnosis.
This first product of start-up CellScope, called Oto, is already available to healthcare professionals and coming soon for home use.
CellScope wants to be more than an otoscope: its goal is to become the world’s first digital first aid kit, and its San Francisco-based team is already working on an eye attachment.
Founders of CellScope foresee their product being used by everyone in the chain of command from school to parent and finally to clinics. They even envision an educational use for the tool, because the device allows for picture taking so that children can see what an infected eardrum looks like.
CellScope has not revealed what the product will cost, although a Facebook post by a founding member indicates they hope to have it ready for individuals within the year.
