5 latest treatments for diabetes
The following are the five new medical options that enhance blood glucose control for people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Consult with your doctor before taking any of these drugs.

What it is: BYETTA is an injectable prescription medicine that may improve blood sugar (glucose) control in adults with type 2 diabetes, when used with diet and exercise. BYETTA is not insulin and should not be taken instead of insulin. BYETTA can be used with Lantus® (insulin glargine), which is a long-acting insulin, but should not be taken with short- and/or rapid-acting insulin.
How it works: improves blood glucose control by mimicking incretin hormones, stimulating insulin and slowing stomach-emptying
Frequency of use: injected twice at mealtime
Side effects: can cause nausea, weight loss
Safety precaution: Do not take BYETTA if you have had an allergic reaction to exenatide or any of the other ingredients in BYETTA.

- Treatment: Exenatide extended release (Bydureon)
What it is: BYDUREON is the first once-weekly, non-insulin injection.
How it works: One dose lasts a full 7 days.
- Each weekly dose of BYDUREON is made up of tiny microspheres that hold the medicine
- After an injection of BYDUREON and the initial release of medicine, the microspheres slowly break down and gradually release more medicine into your body
- By breaking down slowly over time, the microspheres allow BYDUREON to be released all week long
Frequency of use: Once weekly
Side effects: Can cause inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) and kidney problems (kidney failure).
Safety precautions: Do not use BYDUREON if you or any of your family members have ever had MTC or if you have an endocrine system condition called Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
