Dengue cases in Tainan decreasing
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said that the outbreak in the municipality of Tainan in Taiwan is receding.
CDC Director Steven Kuo said that since May, total cases reached 4,884, 88.13% the 5,542 total cases in Taiwan. Kuo still sees the situation as serious, but he states that the reported cases are decreasing by the day. The patients who were reported on Sunday also got the disease one to two weeks prior.
“The centers will need to observe for one or two more weeks before it can be sure if the situation has turned around,” said Kuo.
If the outbreak still hasn’t turned around by then, the CDC would have to rethink their strategy. Kuo says that they should focus on clearing the mosquito breeding grounds like stagnant water.
He also sees spraying pesticides as a wasted effort since even if just two out of 10 mosquitoes survive; they can then breed and spread the disease. He adds that spraying is just for show; since not doing it will make the public think they’re not doing any measures.
Kaoshin is the area with the second-most number of dengue cases at 571.
