Engineer creates hands-free wheelchair for paraplegic friend
Engineer Kevin Halsall took apart a Segway to build the Ogo, a hands-free wheelchair to help his paraplegic friend.
The Ogo was built from a Segway with a patented moving seat. It has a top speed of 20km/hr and has asset of wide wheels that can turn it into an “off-road monster.”
The wheelchair is controlled by shifting the user’s weight to change directions. The user will have to use their core muscles to control the wheelchair, which is beneficial to their health.
Regaining the freedom of their hands, paraplegics can do tasks that a normally taken for granted, like mowing the lawn or playing basketball.
The hands-free wheelchair is in prototype stage, Halsall says that they “are currently in the pre-production set up, and are expected to be up and going soon.”
