Nine people in Japan, including three in Tokyo, died after choking on the popular rice cakes known as “mochi” during the New Year festivities.

Officials reported that 18 people from Tokyo alone were sent to hospital.

It is customary for Japanese families to cook “ozouni” soup, which has the sticky rice cakes in the vegetable broth.
