How to prevent sleep apnea
Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder where breathing sometimes stops and starts as you sleep.
Here are some ways to prevent it:
- Quit smoking. The muscles that keep the airways open are less likely to collapse at night when you sleep if you don’t smoke.
- Keep a healthy weight.
- Avoid medicines and alcohol. They can relax your throat muscles and slow your breathing.
- Maintain a regular sleep routine: steady sleep helps you relax. Also, sleep apnea is less likely to occur when you get plenty of sleep.
- Avoid caffeine and heavy meals within two hours of going to bed.
- Sleep on your side.
