How to soothe heartburns
If you have mild heartburns, fret not. A bit of self-care can go a long way to relieve them.
Do the following:
Sleep well
- Stop eating at least three hours before bedtime because the more food is in your stomach, the more likely you will develop heartburn.
- Sleep on your left side as it prevents upward pressure on the the lower esophageal sphincter (LES).
- Avoid sleeping with a pile of pillows under your head.
Avoid certain foods
- Alcohol
- Coffee, especially caffeinated ones.
- Chocolate
- Cow’s milk
- Tea
- Tomato-based foods
- Citrus fruits and juices
- High-fat foods
- Peppermint and spearmint
Limit stress
When you have heartburn, the key is to limit stress, but instead of doing it through smoking or drinking alcohol, you might want to do it a healthy manner, such as light-walking or pampering yourself by listening to music.
