Under population to hit Japan in 2060

September 16, 2015

Japan’s Health, Labour, and Welfare Ministry is concerned about the decline in Japanese population and its effect on the country’s future, according to a report by NHK world.

A report by the ministry forecasts that Japan’s population will decrease to about 86.7 million people in 2060. The country’s population was about 126.9 million in March. By that time, 40% of the population will be seniors aged 65 years and above.

Getting married and having kids are becoming less of a priority as the ministry predicts that nearly 30% of men and about 20% of women will never have married by the age of 50 in 2035.

In a survey, more than two-thirds of men and women who have children aged 15 or younger say that being a parent is a burden and they feel anxious about raising children.

The ministry stresses that the government needs to help young people secure stable incomes and improve their work-life balance as well as support for child-bearing and child-raising, are essential factors in halting the country’s population decline.
