WHO: Ebola might be slowing down in Sierra Leone
The World Health Organization has reported that Ebola might be slowing in down in Sierra Leone, even though the country remains the most hard-hit by the disease.
“There are signs that case incidence may have leveled off in Sierra Leone, although with 248 new confirmed cases reported in the week to 4 January 2015, it remains by far the worst-affected country at present,” the WHO said.
Head of United Nations Ebola response mission Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed however cautioned against declaring victory against the disease too quickly.
“It is only at this moment of optimism and relative success that sometimes we are worried of a sense of complacency,” he said.
The disease has claimed thousands of lives in the country: 495 out of 838-infected healthcare professionals alone have died.
In total, it has claimed 8,235 lives out of 20,747 known cases worldwide, though there are many unreported cases. The disease is spreading rapidly especially in the western part of Sierra Leone.
