Singapore’s HMI Medical to build a new 300-bed hospital in Sarawak
HMI Medical has signed a Memorandum of Agreement with Ibraco Berhad, a Sarawak-based property developer listed on Bursa Malaysia, for the acquisition of land to build its third hospital in Malaysia. The new facility, to be named Regency Hospital Kuching, will be located within The NorthBank township in Kuching, Sarawak, and is scheduled to open in 2029.
The 300-bed tertiary hospital will be fully owned and operated by HMI Medical and is designed to meet growing demand for advanced healthcare in Sarawak, Malaysia, and the wider Southeast Asian region. It will feature smart hospital systems, state-of-the-art medical technology, and internationally benchmarked clinical standards.
Headquartered in Singapore, HMI Medical operates hospitals and healthcare facilities in Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Vietnam. With more than 27 years of experience in Malaysia, the group runs Mahkota Medical Centre in Melaka and Regency Specialist Hospital in Johor. The company has contributed to Malaysia’s private healthcare sector and the growth of medical tourism since 1998.
Group CEO Chin Wei Jia said the project shows HMI Medical’s commitment to improving health and well-being in Sarawak and neighbouring regions, adding that the state’s economic growth and increasing international connectivity make Kuching an ideal location for the new hospital.
Dr Richard Chew, Senior Surgeon and Board Director for HMI Medical’s hospitals in Malaysia, said the establishment of said facility is expected to create new opportunities for economic growth and medical tourism. Ibraco Group Managing Director Datuk Chew Chiaw Han said the hospital is also poised to provide training opportunities for healthcare professionals.
