TB top cause of death among people with HIV – DOH
The Philippines’ Department of Health (DOH) recently reported that one in five deaths among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV) is caused by tuberculosis (TB).
The agency said TB remains the leading cause of death among PLHIV but stressed that early screening and proper treatment can prevent it. It explained that those with HIV have weaker immune systems, making them more vulnerable to TB and its complications if left untreated.
The DOH noted that co-infection can be prevented through regular TB screening, continuous antiretroviral therapy (ART), and Tuberculosis Preventive Treatment (TPT). It also urged parents to have their children vaccinated with the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin vaccine and advised individuals with persistent coughs to seek medical consultation and wear masks.
From January to March 2025, the DOH recorded 5,101 newly diagnosed HIV cases, or an average of 57 cases daily.
The health agency also reminded families of TB patients to avail themselves of TPT at health centers even if they show no symptoms.
