Philippines’ Quezon City logs over 200% increase in Covid-19 case
Quezon City has recorded a rise in Covid-19 cases over the past three weeks, prompting the city’s Epidemiology and Surveillance Division (QCESD) to step up case monitoring and disease surveillance.
Home to more than 3 million residents, based on the 2024 Census of Population, the city recorded an increase of 265.22% in Covid-19 cases. QCESD data showed that cases climbed to 84 from June 11 to July 1, compared with 23 cases logged between May 21 and June 10. The latest figures brought the city’s total confirmed cases for the year to 146.
Children account for most cases
According to QCESD, children aged 14 and below accounted for the largest share of infections at 30% of the total. They were followed by individuals aged 25 to 29 at 16%, while senior citizens aged 60 and above also accounted for 16%. City urges continued health precautions
The city government said it will continue monitoring cases and conducting disease surveillance to track the situation and detect any clustering of infections.
Residents were urged to observe health precautions, including covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, washing hands regularly with soap and water or using alcohol-based sanitizers, and wearing face masks when experiencing Covid-19 or other respiratory symptoms.
The city also advised residents to avoid touching their faces with unclean hands, keep a safe distance from others when sick, and stay home while recovering.
Parents were encouraged to bring children with respiratory symptoms to the nearest health center for assessment. Older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems were likewise urged to seek medical consultation as soon as symptoms appear to reduce the risk of complications.
