Coffee doesn’t dehydrate

January 22, 2014

Here’s a piece of news to make coffee fans smile as they sip their morning cuppa — Birmingham University researchers said the idea that drinking coffee is dehydrating to the body is a myth.

In the article in Daily Mail, sports scientist Sophie Killer said “the idea that coffee dehydrates stems from research done on samples of caffeine over 80 years ago,” adding that the 1928 study is not necessarily relevant in this day and age.

The latest study took 50 healthy men and asked them to consume either four mugs of water or coffee for three days before swapping the option. They ate the same food and were banned from vigorous exercise and alcohol.

Tests of blood and urine samples showed that the men were just as well hydrated when they drank coffee and when they had water. They also passed the same amount of urine.

Killer said that her industry-funded study shows that coffee doesn’t dehydrate — at least when consumed in moderate amounts. She explains that coffee is just as hydrating as water because the diuretic effect of the caffeine is made up for by the water content of the drink.

HEALTHIER AND HAPPIER

To get those above 60 to live healthier and happier, Tropicana Medical Centre arranged an event for its 120 Tropicana Golden Years Privilege Club members.

It started with two health talks: Consultant endocrinologist Professor Emeritus Datuk Dr Khalid Abd Kadir (photo) talked about how hormones affect the ageing process and consultant cardiologist Dr Lau Gin Choy talked about how to care for the heart. There were also workshops on keeping up with IT knowledge, gardening tips and dietary choices suitable for those above 50 years old.

Participant Kathryn Khoo, 65, said: “It’s a good reminder on taking care of our health. The nutrition workshop gave me more knowledge and understanding on the importance of good diet and exercise.”

Just put chopped ingredients into the jar, followed by liquid. Then select the pre-programmed function. At the end of the cooking time, the appliance will automatically keep the food warm for 40 minutes.
