Pan-fry for fewer calories

The crunchy delight of squid encrusted in golden, crispy batter unfortunately comes with some health risks.

Obesity, clogged arteries, high blood pressure – the list of dangers linked to fried food is long.

To celebrate Chinese New Year with greater peace of mind, owner and chef of Chinese restaurant Majestic Bay, Mr Yong Bing Ngen, has created a less-sinful version of cereal squid with the help of the Health Promotion Board.

Instead of deep-frying, he chose to pan-fry the ingredients, which also include scallops and oats.

This reduces the amount of oil in the dish, which also means fewer calories.

Deep-frying uses a lot of oil – up to several cups – as it requires food to be submerged in hot oil in order to be cooked.

Every tablespoon of oil can add about 120 kilocalories to a dish. But one serving of this pan-fried creation contains only 203 kilocalories.

Mr Yong used sunflower oil, which is low in saturated fat and, therefore, better for the heart
