Smoking fatal for half of elderly smokers
Researchers from the Hong Kong University School of Public Health have found smoking claims half of smokers aged 65 and above.
The findings came from their 11-year analysis from 18 Elderly Health Centers (EHCs) where they examined 65,510 elderly people.
The study found that 19, 520 (30 per cent) smokers died. They also found that the risk of developing lung cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) increased by four times.
However, it is not all bad news.
“If the elderly quit smoking, we found that their survival rate can be largely improved,” Professor Lam Tai-hing who led the study said.
