How to prevent obesity in your children
Childhood obesity is a major problem. In some countries, it is even an epidemic. Here are some tips to prevent obesity in your children.
1. Pick healthy and nutritious foods.
This should include plenty of vegetables, whole-grain products and fruits. When choosing dairy products, go for the low-fat option. Other ways you can promote healthy eating is through serving medium-sized portions and providing healthy snacks, such as fruits. And remember: keep out the soda and junk food.
2. Encourage exercise and other physical activity
Exercise has numerous benefits. It helps in losing weight, recharging your mind, relieving stress and anxiety as well as increasing self-esteem. Encourage your children to be physically active by scheduling aside time every day, or week, for some exercise. Activities can include running, brisk walking, swimming, cycling and the list goes on.
3. Keep sedentary time at bay
Limit time spent on the Internet, playing video games and watching TV to 2 hours minimum. Instead of opting for these sedentary activities, encourage your children to be involved in more activity.
4. Schedule regular medical check-ups for your children
Your local pediatrician will do a complete physical examination on your children and ensure that their weight, height and body mass are within a healthy range.
5. Make sure your children are well-rested
Missed sleep can lead to obesity. Teenagers need 9 hours of sleep, school-aged children need 10 hours of sleep each night and younger children need 12 hours.
