One new HIV case reported in every two hours in Philippines
MANILA- The Philippine Department of Health (DOH) said Tuesday that one new case of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has been reported every two hours in the country so far this year.
For June alone, there were 431 new HIV cases, bringing the total number of cases in the first half of this year to 2,323, Eric Tayag, DOH spokesman said.
The June new HIV cases were 46 percent higher than the figure a year ago and the “highest number of cases reported in a month,” data of the DOH National Epidemiology Center showed.
About 95 percent of the cases in June were males and the reported mode of transmissions were sexual contact, numbered 387. needle sharing among injecting drug users came to 43, and one was mother to child transmission.
“Males having sex with other males, accounting for 88 percent, were the predominant type of sexual transmission,” the DOH said.
